Most tradies and small business owners I talk to think they lose jobs on price. They do not. They lose them on the phone.
Picture a caller with a burst pipe at seven in the evening. They do not leave a voicemail. They ring the next name on Google, and whoever picks up wins the job. Not the cheapest, not the best reviewed. The one who answered.
The number nobody adds up
Here is the part that hides in plain sight. Say one emergency call a week rings out. Say the average job is a few hundred dollars. That is not a rounding error. Over a year it adds up to tens of thousands of dollars walking to a competitor, from a phone that simply was not answered.
You will not find that number on a report, because a missed call leaves no trace. There is no line item for the job you never knew you lost. That is exactly why it goes unfixed for years.
Why voicemail stopped working
People do not leave messages the way they used to. When a call goes to voicemail after hours, most of those callers are gone. They are not sitting by the phone waiting for a callback tomorrow morning. They have already moved on to the next result.
So the honest question is not "do I have voicemail". It is "where does my call actually go at seven on a Friday, and does anything happen when it gets there".
Three things worth doing this week
- Put a real, answered number on your after-hours line, not a mailbox nobody checks.
- Cover the five in the evening to eight in the morning window. That is when the emergencies land and when your competitors are asleep too.
- Count how many calls you actually miss. Most owners have never once worked it out. You cannot fix a number you do not look at.
Where the AI part fits
An AI voice on its own was never the answer. The call is only the start. Someone still has to make the booking, chase the quote, key the job into the software, send the reminder, and pick up the thread in the morning. That is real work, and it needs real people who know how a business runs.
So we built it in that order. A proven human team runs the real work by day. Cleo, our AI receptionist, is the second half, and she does more than pick up. She answers the calls the team cannot, after hours and on weekends, gets the whole job down and reads it back so nothing is wrong. Then she actually moves it. She texts the on-call person the urgent ones, puts the job straight into the software your business already runs on, and when a job needs a call back out, she makes it. The team is the reason it works. Cleo makes sure the call that starts a job is never the one you miss, and that it is sorted, not just noted.
